Independent Geotechnical Engineer
Matt brings over 18 years of experience in the mining industry, complemented by a strong academic foundation that includes a BSc (Hons) in Applied Geology, an MSc in Geotechnics, and a PhD in Mining Engineering. His academic expertise has been crucial in his contributions to geological and geotechnical roles at leading international mining companies. Matt is a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (IOM3) and a member of the Geological Society of London.
A passionate programmer, Matt applies his skills to advanced data analysis and knowledge discovery, driving innovation in mining practices. He is dedicated to advancing research in rock mechanics, rock mass characterization, slope design, and excavatability. During his PhD, he developed an open-source framework for integrating machine learning algorithms into excavatability analysis, and he continues to refine this work, focusing on its practical application in mining operations.

Data Collection & Analysis
I can help you build your geological and geotechnical database by mapping onsite, designing and managing drilling programs, logging, and sample selection for laboratory testing.
Engineering Geological Modelling
Data is one thing, but converting this data into spatial knowledge is quite another. I can help by modelling your geological and geotechnical data and producing a geotechnical model, which forms the key input into the Geotechnical design.
Geotechnical Design
With a solid engineering geological model,I can generate a robust geotechnical design for your mining operation by minimising risk and maximising value.
Onsite Support
I can support your mining operation on-site by providing technical support to your mining teams across most Mine Technical Disciplines; including Mine Management.
Geotechnical Risk Management
Once it has been designed, the geotechnical risks must be managed during the excavation phase. I can support your operation by providing geotechnical assessments, developing risk management procedures, and helping manage adverse ground conditions
Innovations & CI
I can provide Innovation and Continious Improvement support to help implement new technologies across the mining value chain, from idea generation through to project management.
